Not been around much

Postby JoM » 05 Sep 2023, 15:54

I’ve missed you all, John’s taken some much needed time off so we’ve been out and about.

Had a great few days in Dublin, walked miles and fell totally in love with the city. Lived on Irish stew (Bruxelle’s was the best, Osc), visited a few really interesting museums and did a bit of family history research by visiting some addresses John had found for where his paternal grandfather grew up. We really could’ve done with longer there but will definitely be back. It was the first time I’d been there with John. I’ve been with a friend, on my own and taken the lads several times for day trips.

Had my tooth out, might have to lose another too. Oh joy!

Joe has a new job. He can’t really progress anymore than he has already at GE, the next step would be to have his manager’s job but he’s worked there all his working life, lives half a mile away and doesn’t retire until 2036 so he’d have a long wait. He was actually head hunted by the company via his Linkedin profile and had an interview last Friday which lasted all afternoon, he came home buzzing about it and had got on really well with the people who work there, especially as the manager is a Man Utd supporter. Yesterday morning he had an email asking if he’d be available for a call in the afternoon and they offered him the job!
The downside is that it’s based in Warwick which is about 50 miles away so it’s a lot more traveling but they upped the salary to take that into account and have also said that he can work from home when he has days where he has admin to do. It’s a multinational engineering company and will require working away on occasions, Norway, Germany and Denmark are places he may have to go. Me and John are just being typical parents and worrying about him driving so far on three different motorways every day.

Tom’s back at work this week, he’s been in for training yesterday and today and was really happy last night as the school had had time to analyse the GCSE results (the first ones the school had ever had) and they’d exceeded the national average.

So that’s my essay

Glad you had a good vacation in Dublin, Jo. 8-)

Will Joe use the toll road from Cannock? - could be a bit expensive as I hear it's something like £8.60 end to end these days ....
The M42 is OK as long as you just drone along with all the traffic and the M40, I found, was usually fine to drive.

Thanks Al!

He will Os, the normal M6 is pretty much unusable before 9am, especially with the roadworks still ongoing at Walsall. We thought that there used to be a frequent user pass but can’t find anything about it now apart from a discount pass for local users just going a couple of junctions.

The saver ticket prices for the full journey are a minefield and it does not look as though much is saved except that the barrier will lift automatically.

Why don't they do what Paris Metro does and offer a carnet of tickets? One ticket / journey = €2 say, 10 tickets = €18.5, 20 ticket = €35.

Just keep it simple.
