It's a data thing Ria.

Your cables provide the connection for the Internet for your router. However the cables will no longer support a phone connection as it only talks digital data to a router, not analogue data to a phone. Think of it like the Digital TV switch over.

We went this route by choice about a decade ago in France. Then I got Fibre and there is no longer a concept of a landline. Just a fibre optic cable that plugs into the router.

It has it's advantages and disadvantages. One is that they keep messing with my settings for the answerphone on the router. I switch it off, they switch it on. Nobody is going to the internet to look for answerphone records so everyone who leaves an answerphone message is wasting their time.

I also get issues with false engaged signals and also there are times which I'm calling but the phone doesn't ring. It's all a bit immature and very frustrating.

At least you don't have to put in a phone line and a network socket in every room in the house and a stupid "vendor" switch to connect to all these cables when you build a new house in the UK. It has become a "standard" in France. It's pitiful.

Suff, soon there will be no need for fibres or cables.

Vodafone are, allegedly, trialling 5g to the home in areas where the signal exists at strength.

You get a router and plug it in. It picks up the signal from the local mast and you're away. Your home network is now full Wi-Fi, but if you still have kit needing cables there are four ports. Phone is VOIP with a dedicated port for that - if you need it.

I was asked if I wanted to try but declined - it is still flaky. I have their latest "standard" router with VOIP - it's 5G enabled. What I notice on my mobile is that the signal is often 4G or sometimes LTE, rarely 5G, though the mast is only about 400 metres away and uninterrupted.

Vic, Shell has it. Just don't plug a phone in.

Most of us use mobiles for calls nowadays, we don't need landlines.

We keep ours plugged in, but the only people who call us on it are Doreen and sometimes Harry - although usually he calls me via Messenger, as it's free

It’s a tad annoying though when you can’t find your mobile and you can’t ring it to help

We’ve stopped using our landline phone, John’s mobile is provided by work so all calls are free. I pay £9 a month for data and calls.
We did have Sky’s talk plan, pay a fixed amount every month and get all calls free, but it’s jumped from £10 to £13.50 and we don’t make enough calls to justify that.
