My mums number has never changed, and for example it something like 3235391 and my fils number is 3134391. They have both had there numbers for just on 40 years.

What's the odds on that?

Back then, there numbers would have been

335391 and
334391.

We did`nt have a phone until we got married and managed a pub.
When we were courting (lovely word  ) OH was in the merchant navy
and often sailed out of Liverpool.
He would write to me giving a time and phone me at the local phone box.
The number was 1947 and i would be waiting outside for the phone to ring.
The trouble was that a lot of people living in our road did the same so
there was often a lot waiting.
In those days (the 50`s) you had to go via the operator.

We didn't have a phone until I was around 9 years old and then it was a party line.

Our number was 963 - and that still is mum and dad's number only with two more digits on the front.

I remember dad putting one of those little metal locks on the dial - you could only dial 999. Except it didn't take me long to work out if you picked up the handset and tapped the little black button things you could still make a call!

I had forgotten about Dial a Disc.

That was it! Dial A Disc

Yes, I remember the trim phone ringtone

I seem to remember that whenever anyone called, or you called anyone, whoever answered the phone always answered by saying the number first rather than "hello"

Over here Jo the norm on answering the phone is to say 'digame' which means..tell me. :?

I always want to retort by saying..well of course I'm going to tell you that's why I'm ringing!

When we moved here we were assigned someone's redundant number and it's only recently that we've stopped getting calls for Brenda Tomlinson. Obviously we don't know whether she'd simply changed her number, if she'd moved or if she'd sadly died but some calls would come from people who knew her and finding us answering and explaining we'd been given the number when we moved and it was no longer her number came as quite as surprise :?
