I sort of dropped out here. We arrived at #1 sons on Monday for 4 days of relaxation, walks with the dogs and generally getting some time with them as we haven't seen them since their wedding last June.
Tuesday morning we received a call from my Bil, needed us desperately. Our niece had been in for an esophageal operation in a private hospital after having been failed by the NHS in just about every possible way. . When the surgeon didn't find the achalasia which was the scheduled for the op he looked further. He found stage 3 stomach cancer which has metastised and spread around the body but, thankfully, not to the heart, lungs or liver.
We dropped everything and put the dogs in a kennels in Grantown. Then headed for Fife.
My niece is in Ninewells hospital in Dundee, the Same hospital which failed her in the first place. It has directly claimed the lives of 5 members of my family due to "overwhelming sepsis", none of which was present before the operation. She is on the oncology ward.
Meanwhile I fell over a part of a transcript of two Italian doctors talking to each other. It seems they have 3,000 ventilators in Italy but 7,000 potential cases which might need one. Triage is cutting off at 60, if you need scarce resources and are over 60, then you survive with other palliative care. Beds are not an issue, staff are. All non critical surgery is suspended, wards have been emptied and closed, staff have been drafted into the Covid-9 wards.
Meanwhile staff in Italy are being infected. They are finding that it is Incredibly infective and that they were not taking enough precautions and are losing staff desperately needed on the wards.
Did Nobody even talk to China?
Oncology wards are being emptied in Italy. Which brings it home all over again to me.
WHO ranks France as #1 for health services in the world. Italy #2. The NHS? #18.
Personally I'm supposed to be in Prague next week for a job I'm trying to sign the contract on. I am also on the higher target list as my heart is enlarged and presses on my left lung causing constant fluid.
In the end we are pretty much all at risk to some degree or other. Personal tragedies continue outside of the virus and all countries are failing us. I said, before, that countries were worried more about their GDP than lives.
If they were really worried about lives they would all have shut all borders, schools, non critical businesses and drafted the military to facilitate the functioning of the country.
They did not and now we have to live with it.
