Oh she is so sensible, isn't she. I first started using Delia recipes when she used to have them in the London Evening Standard, and hers was the first cookery book I ever bought. I still use the books I had in catering college though and although I have others (presents) I keep returning to my basic ones. For me Delia was the first and best of the tv cooks.

Even with the hundreds of cookery books that I have in the house I always fall back on Delia if I'm in any doubt about anything!

I do hope that nobody, especially Delia, takes this the wrong way, but she was the Mrs Beeton of the C20th. Everything she did worked, basic, but it worked.

If it wasn't for mum, Delia, and my Good Housekeeping cookbook I couldn't fry an egg, well, not like Gary Rhodes - thank God. ;) :P :D

Osc, Debih and WM me too :D
Well, I could fry an egg thank to my mum, but she always said I taught her how to cook ;)
Good Housekeeping has been my 'go to' book for, goodness, about 40 years  I bought it from the book club soon after I started work!
Delia's How to cheat at cooking was my second book, I would cook her Italian Beef for my parents to feed guests while they were out at cricket. Guests would never believe their 16-yr-old had done it, none of their children cooked 'proper' meals.
I had a lovely time with that book, through several boyfriends we worked our way through chicken curry (add a chopped apple and raisins), there was a pork dish using Homepride white wine sauce, all sorts :)

And Debih wot's wrong with fish fingers :D I'm worn out from Minnie, I've cooked some sausages in the oven and am doing a baked potato for Bb, and found a portion of baked beans in the freezer so that's him sorted. Also cooked more chicken breast for Minnie and for him for tomorrow's sandwiches, and now have some fish fingers in the oven plus a few tiny sausage rolls to add to his packed food. I'd got them for him and youngest as a treat but with his new brace youngest couldn't have them.
You could say that's all junk but in context with what we mostly have I'm not bothered :D

I had a GH cookbook that was a wedding present in 1977 (god I'm old  ) and it really was my bible for the first few years. There was a fantastic pate recipe in there that I made for a few dinner parties (Abigail's Party anyone? :P )   I even had a frock similar to the one Alison Steadman wore in that

I have to admit I couldnt cook at all until I was about 35.

Mum always made us meals from scratch. My two brothers could produce a meal but if I was asked to make tea and toast you could guarantee the toast would be burnt, the tea stewed, etc.
I could stand beside a cooker stirring mince while the potatoes burnt in front of my eyes.

I loathed cooking and would either go to mum's every night for tea or get a takeaway. To my everlasting shame I remeber asking in the old femail chatroom how to cook chicken breasts and Nanapat having to take me through it step by step

I have gradually learnt how to cook but I have to hang around the kitchen when doing so or I'm liable to forget there is food cooking until I smell burning!

I've got to admit to being surprised at what some children are fed. My niece's wee one is now 2 and was always just fed whatever they were eating. She happily eats tuna, mince, stew, lasagne, chicken and salad and doesn't have to be specially catered for at all. However her dad has an older son from a previous relationship who is 10. He survives on chocolate and frozen food. When he stays over every weekend with my niece they have a horrific time trying to get him to eat home cooked food. My niece finds it really frustrating having to try to get him to even try what they're having....he'll sit there playing about with the food whilst his 2 year old sister devours hers.
