Furry Friends Updates?

Postby shazsha » 20 Feb 2013, 20:05

How are the furry patients today? I've been looking at the posts re Minnie, Millie and wee Smudge and was wondering how they all are today.

Candy is much the same. Luckily she has stopped the early morning wailing but she is still very demanding of her pets. She's still eating her butcher's cat meat and also a chicken breast daily. However she seems to have some problem with her feeding and I literally have to put the chicken to her mouth and feed it bit by bit - she's also managing to accidentally nip my fingers when doing this!
She is still wandering into places and getting stuck, but if she is out of the living room we go and check on her every few minutes just to make sure she is okay!
When she hears her food getting put out she still manages to move like lightning...definitely no problem with her appetite!
Yesterday I was out washing the landing and she took a wee wander out there and sat happily for about twenty minutes then came in and went for a big sleep-her big outing seemed to tire her out!

She sounds happy Shaz, which is as much as you can possibly hope for :)
Have you got a mini-chopper thingy, or a processor? You could put the chicken in with a little water - if you poach it add some of the cooking liquid. It should then be like tinned food :)

Minnie is...well, no different except she's what I'd say is a bit depressed, fed up. She hasn't the energy to do anything still, and the voracious hunger is driving her and us mad.
She sees the vet in the morning, I don't know how much they decrease the steroids by or what difference it will make. I'm hoping she might suggest taking her out, just to the end of the road or something, just to interest her a bit.
She's very, very weak, the drugs cause muscle wastage as well as the fact that she's barely moved for such a long time - three weeks tomorrow since we first took her :?

Glad to hear they are both doing ok.

Millie came across as being very depressed for a while Di. We put it down to boredom - she wasn't really able to go out as didn't have the energy to walk far. It was hard to know what to do really - we left the radio on when we were out and I took her out in the car a lot but had to pick my time to take her as it was too cold to leave her in the car whilst I was shopping, etc

Millie seems to be doing well - have posted on another thread (sorry, using kindle makes it a pain to repeat it!!!!)

Minnie loves going in the car Debih, but she hates being lifted and shouldn't really be jumping in and out.
Plus I can't lift her anyway! But I think it's a bit early for that really.
Also, because it's an auto-immune disease, the drugs mean she's got no resistance so won't be able to go where there are many dogs.

It's really hard isn't it. I suppose you have to try to remember the that a dog's natural thing is to sleep as much as possible and that they don't "think" in the same way as we do.

Di, I do poach the chicken but hadn't even thought of leaving it in some of the cooking liquid. I think that will be a big help because, though she loves the chicken, I think she finds it rather dry.

I was thinking, re Minnie and her depression and constant hunger, would one of those balls you put food inside maybe help? Having to work her mind to get the food out may alleviate her boredom, give her an interest and appeal to her greed at present.

Candy was never a cat who liked being lifted. She would come and stand next to us to be petted and then wander away. Since she has been ill she has been getting lifted( and enjoying it) and I think this is comforting her and alleviating her boredom making her happier. I suppose they are just like us.....constant pain and sickness drags us all down and makes us depressed.

We are saving a some of her dry food to put in her king with a broken biscuit and it does help a little, at least with taking a bit longer to eat!
Off to the vet soon, hopefully good news re the drugs :)
