Still boiling

I have used filter jugs for years, and I still filter the water before I boil it. The filters take out chlorine and chemicals, but not crypto.

This is the latest from our MP Seema Kennedy. It sounds like it's going to be another week.


I remain in daily contact with United Utilities regarding the cryptosporidium contamination of water in South Ribble and boil water notice. I have emphasised the need for action and urged them to give time scales as to when this situation can be expected to be resolved. United Utilities informed me that UV rigs are being established over the weekend but remain unable to speculate as to when the boil water notice will finally be lifted.

Furthermore United Utilities insist they are unable to offer any idea as to the cause of the problems while there is an ongoing investigation by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. I have made contact with the Drinking Water Inspectorate in order to ascertain what the process is for their investigation and when we will be offered some idea as to the cause of this situation.

United Utilities advise that they remain committed to fixing the problem and to rectifying it for those businesses and individuals who have been affected, they have also assured me there will be lessons learned going forward. Finally should any vulnerable people require support with water provision please contact United Utilities or my office and they will help as necessary.

Meaningless twaddle unless they know how the problem came about in the first place.

Their affected customers should take out a group-action litigation against UU and really make them pay.

They keep talking about compensation, but I'm not holding my breath really. It will probably be twenty quid off the bill or something similar.

It's a blinking nightmare isn't it Rodo, I really feel for you.
Said it before I know, but it really does bring it home how fortunate we are to have (almost always) safe water in this country, but how easily it can fall apart.

It really is truly abysmal, and yes Frank I'm afraid you are right about that! It is only really since I moved away from the SE that I've realised how London-centric this country really is!

They are fixing up these ultra violet things now, but say it will be well into next week before they can consider telling us to stop boiling.

There have been comments on Facebook telling us to stop whingeing about it. They say it is far harder in 3rd world countries, but of course the point is we aren't in a 3rd world country, and we pay a hefty whack for water rates each year. We are in a civilised (??) country receiving 3rd world service.

Yes I saw those Rodo, and replied to one. I have a friend whose elderly father has had a tummy bug, he lives alone in the affected area and was unaware he should be boiling water until she told him!! The water authority should be ashamed of themselves

Agree, they authorities should have made sure that every household was informed by way of a leaflet, but in all honesty Kaz if I heard about a problem like this and knew my mom was living in the area one of the first things I'd do is call her and make sure she'd heard about it and was following the advice and was OK
