Starter ideas

We are having friends for dinner on the Friday before Xmas. 6 adults and 6 children. We do it every year but usually do a Sunday afternoon/evening but one family are going away on the Saturday.

The kids will have pizza and chips in front of the tv.

I am home all day so have plenty of time and have decided to do a huge leg of lamb cooked on boulangiere potatoes with veggies. One friend will be bringing the dessert.

I don't know what to do as a starter. It can't involve cheese as one person is allergic to it and I don't fancy doing soup. Mick doesn't eat salmon so that's no good. I

I want something that will go nicely before the lamb but can be made in advance. And I want to do something relatively simple as we are off out to a party on Saturday night so I will be making mini quiches for that on Saturday, a friends for dinner on Sunday where I am making the dessert and I shall be making things on Monday ready to take for dinner to my mums on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Eve I will be prepping stuff for Christmas Day and Boxing Day!!!!!

Any ideas anyone?

How about some nice bread, marinated olives, hoummus, an aubergine dip?

Roast beefsteak tomatoes stuffed with mixed beans, chopped peppers and onions and covered in a crisp and herby breadcrumb crumble. Serve with a side of mixed leaf and carrot salad.

Baked asparagus wrapped in presunto - you can add cheese for those who can eat it.

Funnily enough someone's just posted a recipe for asparagus wrapped in bacon on my Facebook and it looks delicious!

I keep thinking of things that involve cheese :D
Little brie tarts, with a dollop of cranberry; salads with goats' cheese, walnuts, cranberries; pear, blue cheese & walnut...no good at all am I?! :x

Ooooh - smoked mackerel paté? Absolutely lovely, very easy and can be made before. Smoked mackerel, cream cheese, little bit horseradish, lemon juice, seasoning - done :)
With Melba toast?
