A new vodka concoction

I tried a new vodka experiment last night and made Amaretto. It's one of my favourite ripples but it really expensive. I am really pleased with it - it made enough to fill an old Disaronno bottle, the vodka bottle and a flip top glass bottle. And it tasted exactly like the shop bought stuff. A bottle usually costs around 16pound but this cost me around 12 pound to make.

For those of you who fancy it here's the recipe:

2 cups granulated sugar
1cup Brown sugar
2 cups water

Put them in a pan, boil then simmer til the sugar has dissolved.

Add 3 cups vodka (which is a normal sized bottle)
1/4 cup almond extract (I got two tiny bottles from Sainsbury and used them both)
1 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract.

That's it. Just bottle it now.

do you need to use a fairly decent Vodka for this or would a 'cheaper' store own brand be OK as well? :)

sounds delicious

Nero? Which of your devices made that one up Debih??? :D

Sounds goooooood, I might have a go at that one, I love Amaretto :) - especially with crumbled amaretti biscuits and ice cream :)

Do you have to sterilise the bottles??

Stupid kindle fire and predictive text.

I just put the bottles through the dishwasher first.

I'm taking the small bottle to the pub tonight to do a taste test with the landlady.

I like the look of that Debih. Vodka is so versatile....

When I was in Saudi we used to distil a liquor from a brew of watermelon, and like vodka it had little taste of its own so it had to be flavoured.

A sort of whiskey was made by soaking oak chippings in it and adding a touch of burnt caramel. Cointreau was made by adding the zests of Seville oranges, clementines or satsumas to the raw liquor and then adding a few spoons of cane sugar once the flavours had been extracted, and to make Pina Colada we mixed it with coconut milk/cream and pineapple juice.

How clever Debih! I adore Amaretto too.

I like your list of drinks WM. When we were in Cambodia on the boat they served Local Spirits free in the bar. Gin, whiskey and rum and although I wasn't brave enough to taste them neat they tasted like the real thing with tonic and ginger. I'd have loved to have known how they made them-or maybe not :!:
