Around 60% of places for teachers in those subjects are unfilled. This cannot go on. The country needs a large number of pupils to be taking these subjects to a high level if it is to compete at the global level.
It is bad enough that these subjects have been dumbed down to make them more accessible, but to now find that there is a shortage of qualified teachers is a disaster.

The thing is, if you are highly qualified in science or maths, would you choose to go into teaching today? They aren't stupid, there are far better jobs.

Too true!
It's a Catch 22. If we do not teach these subjeects to a high level then we will not produce enough highly qualified people to fill the positions availabe. If that happpens we will either end up dumbing down further or bringing in immigrants who are qualified.

Anybody who goes into teaching, especially in a school full of stroppy teenagers, has my full respect.
I just think the ordinary population of these isles are being gradually feudalised, and that the decline of education is linked to that.

Teachers have been found to be cheating by giving students the information they need to pass exams.
Teachers terrified due to bogus claims of of the same being over familiar or sexually abusing them..
Schools are a charter for dishonesty... I wonder why? With respect to Ofsted? They are not fit for purpose.
