Me too. At 70 I am nearly there, but I do worry about my two grandchildren, both under three. Climate and societal breakdown are my main fears for them.

Oh it will not take till 2044.

We are already surveilled to the nth. CCTV Cameras, some with microphones, are everywhere. Alexa and Siri are always listening in, as are smart meters and your fridge. TVs with voice control (telescreens?) - who knows where that might lead? Mobile phones tracking your every move. The media (MSM and unSocial) using our lack of ability to comprehend and analyse to tell us what to think. Group think. Agendas.

We are already knocking on 1984's door.

Never mind trolleys, what about cars?
Not all tech is bad in cars but:-

Autonomous braking? There's this thing in front of you called a windscreen. Look through it and if you need to stop, put your foot on the brake!
Lane departure warning system. Because obviously we all go out, drink ten pints and then fall asleep in the car going home and we need a bleeper to wake us up.
Automatic headlights, because we're al too dim to switch them on when it gets dark.
I could go on (Yes, I know, I do go on..).

There is a difference between convenience and interference.

I was just in Canada, the automatic box on the Ford Edge I was driving drove me insane. No paddles, no override, just some crazy persons idea of when a gear should change.

But automatic lighting and auto dip. I love them and especially when I forget to turn the lights off. Beforee automatic lights I flattened my battery several times forgetting to turn them off.

Lane departure without sensible lane centering is, I grant you, bloody annoying. If it can't keep you in the centre of the lane then bouncing off the lines is useless.

That being said if I could have a mostly self driving vehicle I would take it. Mainly because I do a lot of long distance drives at very early or late hours often with little sleep. I like to drive when I'm awake and focused. I hate to drive when I'm tired and there is still 500 miles to go and it is time dependent.

There is a big difference between nanny state and enabling technology.
