Love it when the government

Make a big public announcement and they are already years out of date.

Tenfold expansion in chargepoints by 2030 as government drives EV revolution

Sounds good right.

The UK’s charging network has been given a huge boost today (25 March 2022), as government unveils plans to support the UK market to reach 300,000 public electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints by 2030 – equivalent to almost 5 times the number of fuel pumps on our roads today.

Sounds even bettter.

£500 million will be invested to bring high quality, competitively priced public chargepoints to communities across the UK. This includes a £450 million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, which will boost projects such as EV hubs and innovative on-street charging, so those without driveways don’t miss out on cleaner transport.

But what is reality? That Chargepoints has a different notation in the market. It is called connectors. So how many are there today?

Well ZapMap is really your best source for this today.

Zap-Stats – 25 March 2022
50895 CONNECTORS
30325 DEVICES
19101 LOCATIONS
852 {added, my annotation)LAST 30 DAYS

So 10 times 50k is half a million. 200,000 more than the government are telling us we'll get.

Ah well. Can't expect them to update their story to reality after 2 years of building it.

That being said, these are just public one's. Private is going all out too. I expect there to eventually be a few million.

50895 connections installed. How many years to achieve that? How many rapid and ultra-rapid? 5477.

853 in 30 days is 10,001 per year.

Times 7.8 years is 78,007 + 50890 already installed or 128,902 total by 2030. Real world not a dream or a spreadsheet calc.

The infrastructure bods are going to have to up their game somewhat - just like that. And who pays? Not you EV boys and girls, we all do, even if we only own a skateboard. Any news on how to fill the £30bn black hole to replace the lost fuel duty? You are ever so quiet on that. And lost VED? Same muteness. Environmental damage for the raw materials - not a word. Recycling costs and availability compared to ICE?

Toll roads and tracking for all journeys, yet a big "NO" to ID cards. Strange. The Chancellor will get you. You WILL pay, and it wont be cheap.

EVs are a dreamscape.

Nobody is talking toll roads right now for EV.

I was highlighting the fact that the Government, once it has started something, will simply give the wrong figures without cross checking and finding out reality even if it takes them years from start to finish.

They press released 2019 figures for charge points when 2022 is completely different.

Meanwhile Shell has bought out a company that provides charge points so they can build out 40,000 charge connections. Because this is the fuel of the future and they want to be providing it. It has already begun. All the government money will do is make it happen even faster and for companies to spend even more money on it to keep up.

VED? Take a look at vehicle VED some time. It has already changed and will continue to change. In 2030 the EV subsidies on VED will drop, because you won't be able to buy a pure FF vehicle anyway so the VED discounts will not be needed.

Recycling? It is already going on and the smart money is on 98% recyclability for the batteries. EV's are heavily recyclable and also they have a much longer lifetime. Up to 20 years. Older refuse tips are already being mined for resources, they are full of what is needed for EV.

What about the "recycling" for all those billions of litres of engine oil used by ICE cars and changed every 12,000 to 20,000 miles. You don't hear much about that do you??

Face facts. The world is going EV. We are ahead of the curve. The UK government is taking an active hand in ensuring that there won't be "charge poverty" and that is a good thing.

I was just poking fun at how hidebound they are and how they can't adjust to altered reality without a huge kick in the backside.
