It’s finally happened here. A coordinated terrorist attack, 2 mosques, 2 car bombs (which didn’t go off). So far 49 dead, but many more in hospital so the toll is likely rise in the next few days.

A lot of people will be thinking "Now they (the muslims) know how it feels". Sad but there you are.
Stand by for NZ's fairly liberal firearms laws to be "strengthened".

iit's become a very violent old world. RIP.

Cromwell our gun laws are quite tough so it will be interesting to hear how they got their hands on those guns. We just don’t have gun violence. Our police don’t even carry guns, they are in the boot of the car.

There is no us and them here. We are a great big melting pot of a country and we (mostly) tolerate and accept each other. An attack on one corner of society is an attack on us all.

This is an absolute tragedy. Becky loved living and working in NZ. She said that it was one of the easiest-going places she ever knew.

Now this.

A NZ expert, who has been tracking the scourge of right-wing extremism, said that it has been bubbling under the surface since the 1980s, that NZ has been a bit naive in dealing with it and that, due to its acceptance of migrants and its tolerance, thought that it was immune. All that has now gone.

The focus, rightly or wrongly, will now turn to any response from the Muslim community. "Stay calm and carry on" is an old cliché, but that is what needs to happen - from all sides.

It's horrendous, my heart goes out everyone who has been touched by this.

I heard about it on the radio and had to check online because I thought I'd misheard about it happening in New Zealand.

it's just so awful and senseless. I'll never understand what makes a person do something like that; just how can they harbour so much hate?

Weka, so glad you and yours are all OK and my thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this. As you say NZ and it's people will face this together and I hope violence doesn't bring more violence

Stay safe x
