Why hasn't anyone thought of us having a coalition government, such as we had during world war II ?

To me, this would seem to be a very good way of guiding the nation though the problems of steering
us though the Brexit negotiations, and would be advantageous way of conducting the matter.

I'm surprised that, to my knowledge, no-one has suggested this.

What do you think?

I did think of a National Government along the lines of those during the wars, but failed to mention it. From the point of view of running the country it might not have been a bad thing, but I am not now sure one would work anyway - the main sides are too far apart and there are too many irons in too many fires.

You can say that again.

I guess there is a difference between imminent threat of invasion by a superior (in Europe), military force and imminent threat of screwing up a trading relationship.

In the former the parties realise that if they can't work together then there won't be any power to share. In the latter there are two many knives sticking out of backs.

I said this in a post the day after the elections were over.

I think there would be strong suppoet for a coalition government till after brexit is settled possibly for a minimum of 3 years then a return to thre usual 5 year governments

From the people Manxie, but not from the Tory politicians and some of the other MP's. After all the last coalition was "loved" wasn't it and it rewarded the politicians who made that decision for their lack of fear.....

People believed that the last coalition would deliver everything that was in the manifesto of both parties. In reality a coalition is an endless game of collective bargaining and virtually nothing of either manifesto will ever be delivered. The Tories could not get on top of the budget deficit, business growth or benefits cheats. The Lib Dems only delivered a fixed 5 year parliament.

Coalitions. I've watched them functioning (if you can call it that), for two decades in the governments of the other EU states.

is it not tho the people who elect the politicians Suff??

I meant an all party coalition to sort out brexit and the general running of the country for a set time and any politician who wanted a say was expected to be doing the best for the country as a whole not just the interests of his or her particular party affilliation'

Start to earn the pay they award themselves by getting the country out of the current situation, a case of everyone pulling together in the same direction for an ultimate goal that helps everyone.

Or is that too much to ask of a democracy??
