The crazy world of Owen Smith.

Postby Workingman » 24 Aug 2016, 18:16

According to my recollection we had a referendum on leaving the EU and the people of the UK voted to do so. We then got a new PM who told us "Brexit means Brexit" and she set up a new Ministry for that purpose. She also picked three prominent Leavers, all Ministers, to negotiate Brexit. With all that I am assuming the negotiators are working on a plan to be up an running once the PM triggers A50.

I'll be damned annoyed if they are not.

All done and dusted, or is it?

Step forward Owen Smith, the man chosen by Labour MPs to challenge for leadership of the party. He says that he will try to stop the formal triggering of Brexit unless the PM promises a referendum on the final deal or calls a general election to approve it.

Good luck with that one Mr Smith. Not only have you no chance in Law, but you are forgetting that it was Labour heartlands that voted for Brexit. It is a bit rich to now claim that Labour is out of touch with voters, if anyone is it is you. You have probably just made Corbyn's position as leader very safe.

Never thought for one minute that Owen Smith could successfully challenge Jeremy Corbyn,

Good on him. Because Virgin have just had to prove him a liar to protect their name.....

The guy is living in LaLa land or Blair Land which is the same to me. Not much chance of beating Corbyn when he goes against the wishes of the vast majority of the Non Corbyn Labour voters...

But then I've never been an admirer of Labour and I don't give them allowances because of the "bad" Tories. Because I don't see the Tories as "bad" generally. Saves me the kind of Angst Mrs S has whenever she remembers that she voted for Blair once. Only once, but it causes her a lot of pain.

Personally I want Corbyn to win again and again after he loses the next election because he won't step down. He is following the classical Communist path. Get power and then cling to it to the absolute and bitter end no matter what the consequences. After all, it "might" get better.... Pigs might fly too, but that's beside the point.

I'd be chuffed if Corbyn gets in.

We could do with some good old pre-Blair Socialist activity in Parliament. The Tories have had it
their way for too long. It's time they were kicked out.

They won't get kicked out by Corbyn. The only reason Blair kicked out the Tories for so long was that he was virtually Tory himself.

There is not enough support for Corbyn and his policies in the UK.

I saw Blair for what he was long before he came in as PM. I see Corbyn too, very clearly and there is nothing either honest or honourable about that man except the perception of it.

Don't bank on it, Suff.

I agree, Aggers, I have never been a Labour supporter and never will be, but I do come from a Labour heartland with family, friends and neighbours who all support them.

What I hear is that Corbyn is the man for them and they give short shrift to the media darlings such as Smith, Cooper, Mayor Khan, Burnham and the likes. It appears that the more the media goes after Corbyn the harder their support for him becomes.

The UK is renowned for its support of the underdog and for not following orders. The election is a long time off and there are loads of 'floating voters' who will not like to be told how to vote by the media.

Very true WM but it is voters like that who, under Blair and Brown began to wonder who they could vote for. However it was the other voters, those who float centre left to centre right, who carried the elections for Blair. Not those who were always going to vote for Labour. Yes there are floating voters but those who are right of centre will never vote for Corbyn.

The election is, as you say, a long way off. Time for Labour to tear itself to shreds and for Corbyn to put his foot in it. Right up to his neck. He's going to do it too because he is, as the Americans say, "trying to ride two horses with one ass". That is a losing proposition if ever there was one.

So I shall be an interested viewer. I don't expect to be disappointed.

Suff, don't count too many chickens.....

There are 3 1/2 years to go before the next general election, plenty of time for May and the Tories to get things wrong.

The slippiest, but not the only, banana skin is bound to be the Brexit deal. The referendum vote was so close that whatever deal is signed it will anger large numbers of voters. There is the distinct possibility that any deal will simultaneously anger voters on both sides - that would be novel.

Maybe the PM is delaying triggering A50 so that Brexit will be in its infancy and its full effects unknown when the GE comes along. I expect lots of pleas to "give it time" and to "allow us (Tories) to make it work". With there currently being so much mistrust of politicians in the country it is not something to bank on.

I can't see that the P.M. has the right to deliberately delay this matter.

The electors have decided, and it is the Government's job to act accordingly.
That's what democracy is all about. Politicians who chose to ignore this very
fundamental requirement are playing a dangerous game.
