A big splash is being made in the media that the numbers are down 20% - from 906,000 in June 2023 to 728,000 to June 2024.

It all sounds wonderful, even if the 728,000 figure is still way too high, except that the numbers do not exist.

The 728,000 is an estimate - nothing more. The same estimate for June 2023 was 740,000 but that figure was revised up by 166,000 to the 906,000 finally reported. We have no idea what the final figure will be for this year as that will not be reported till next June. It could go anywhere.

What we do know is that a drop of 12,000 from one estimate to another is nothing to crow about.
