The end of the Commonwealth games?

Postby Workingman » 04 Aug 2023, 15:20

Victoria, in Australia, has withdrawn from the 2026 games and now Alberta, Canada, has pulled out of the 2030 games. The cost v return are too high.

The truth is that it is costly to host and not being a global event, with global audiences, it does not attract the advertising revenue to support it, and only a few of the richest Commonwealth countries can afford to host it..

It is also true that many of the 56 members are no longer aligned to the now defunct British Empire on which it is based. And even if they were many of their athletes would never qualify for the likes of the Olympics.

Let it die gracefully and move on.

Can you ever imagine Botswana, Togo, Maldives, Grenada, Belize, Kiribati or Tuvalu ever hosting it? Of course not!

It is a modern irrelevance and time to let it go.

I'd agree with you; it's an anachronism these days.
Now if only they'd get rid of the Olympics as well ......
