They are to be texted by police after a sting operation to catch the criminals who were using technology to spoof their calls. I have mentioned this a number of times on Cafe.

The call looks to be from a UK landline number, but could be from anywhere. Once answered the scam begins, be it pretending to be from your bank or offering investments or selling goods...

My goodness I do hate the scammers, but my sympathy for "victims" is growing thin. They often scam themselves either by greed or stupidity. Every time a scam is reported in the media the reports always come with warnings and rules on how to avoid being scammed and yet people still fall for them. This last year they handed over £48m.

The authorities can, and do, catch the scammers, and thay are getting better at it, but they cannot do a thing about people not helping to protect themselves.

I have reached the stage where I can detect a blind dialler cross connecting to the scammer's phone. By the time they have picked up I have put the phone down.

Also I have found that if you don't say a word after picking up the call, the dialler, more often than not, drops the call. After all if someone is calling you they are going to talk to you aren't they? Should you talk first to a number you don't know?
