When I heard the hollow thud and the unmistakable sound of bending metal and breaking glass.
Immediately followed by a squealing of rubber and the sound or a racing engine.
That sounds nasty thought I. But carried on what I was doing.
A little later I looked out of the window. Now my apartment is sort of wedge shaped and on the small blunt end is a window which looks down on a very busy 5 road junction. Looking out of the window, two of the roads lead off one leg of the junction then divide again leaving a large wedge shape of unused road. That's where loads of cars park (up to 12 of them) at times of the day.
I was looking out of the window when I realised one of the cars was right angles to all the others and glass all around it. Odd thought I, because there was no damage in front of it. It took me a few seconds to realise that this was not the car which had caused the accident, this was the car that had been hit. So hard that it had been literally dragged round 90deg and pushed the full length of the car.
That car was about the size of an Audi A4. The one that had hit it was a Peugeot 306. Which was stopped about 100m away due to the fact that it could not drive any further because the whole left front was pushing on the front wheel. Probably due to the sheer speed of impact.
The police are there now and the Fire Brigade has just shown up. I'm pretty sure that the driver that caused the accident tried to do a runner. I'm guessing he'll be losing his license for a while...
Another slightly interesting night in Brussels.
