Mrs A had a telephone call while I was out yesterday, from some man who said he was from Microsoft, and that there was a serious problem with our computer, but that he could tell her how to put it right. She was immediately suspicious, and told him I was out and that she didn't know how to operate it. "No problem", he said, "just turn it on and I will tell you what to do". "I don't know how to turn it on" she said. At that the caller muttered something rude and hung up. Needless to say, I don't have any fault with my laptop. He obviously was up to no good.

I gave her a big hug and a kiss when I got back.

Be on your guard.

This one's been going for years.
Once they have your number on their list they'll probably keep ringing.
You can give them all sorts of answers but none seem to get rid of them for ever, they stop for a while then start again
One of the best is to just say 'could you hold on a moment please?' as soon as they speak, then just put the receiver down and walk away, leaving them hanging on.

Go away then check the phone in 10 minutes or so, they should have gone
Don't bother with trying to get into any kind of conversation, no they're not microsoft and no you don't have a problem with your computer.

What Di said! Just hang up on them! My MIL was getting all sorts of dodgy calls, despite being on the Telephone Preference scheme We'd both told her to just hang up, but she is a polite older person and finds that difficult. Now, however, she doesn't pick up unless she recognises the number - she lets it go to answer phone, but then picks up to override it if she either recognises the voice or realises it is a call she wishes to take!

It is awful that people have to do stuff like this, just to screen out the nonsense

The names they give themselves, to try and convince us they are British, make me laugh

I had a very obviously Asian lady say "hello, my name is Stacey"

I usually get them every Tuesday. I'm afraid I just tell them to **** off. If I'm in the mood, I pretend m very old and deaf and tell them we've just had new windows fitted thank you
