A question about sewing, machine sewing.

How hard is it? Mum used to make loads of our clothes and made it look easy, but.......

I am thinking of taking myself off camping when it warms up a bit, but I need a tarp for shade and to sit under of an evening. I can get the fabric and bits for peanuts, and my sis has one of those all singing all dancing German machines. Trouble is the fabric comes in 155cm (5' 1") widths and I need two 2m (6' 6") lengths to sew together.... and I need to do the edges. corners, middle seam, put in the eyelets......

Is it worth it or should I just fork out the £25 for one ready made?

Thanks.

I know I'm probably being higgerant (it's been known :P ) but wouldn't sewing tarps together, ie making tiny holes, interfere with the waterproof element :?

Stop being a tight ar*e and put your hand in your pocket.

Sewing bits of tarp together!!! You'll be boiling up nettles for your cup of tea next.

Hmmmm, I kind of thought the hand in pocket answer would be the most popular.

Kaz, you are right about the little holes, that is why the seams have to be taped.

So, by the time you've bought the two tarps, the special thread that you will need to sew them together, the eyelets, the eyelet tool, the tape and then the replacement sewing machine after damaging your sisters all singing all dancing machine by putting tarp through it do you think it'll still work out cheaper than the ready made £25 one?
