The Broken Scaphoid.

I knew that my thumb was not repairing properly from the accident in November, but nobody in the medical world seemed worried - time would heal.

At about Easter time my GP got me an appointment for May 21st to have it looked at.

On Monday, after nearly dropping a boiling kettle, I had had enough. The Minor Injuries unit could not help much and suggested that I got back to Leeds General Infirmary as that is where all my notes, x-rays etc. are.

Today I eventually had some more x-rays taken at LGI and they showed the scaphoid had a break - a clean break. The A&E consultant suggested that it needs pinning and a bone graft. No wonder I have been in so much pain for nearly five months.

Meanwhile I am in a plastic removable cast from my forearm to my fingers.

I have a slip telling me that I will be contacted within seven days.

Yes, Kaz, had I not taken matters into my own hands it would have been May 21st before I was seen and then goodness knows how long after that before treatment.

Oh blimey Frank. My friend fractured her scaphoid, luckily she escaped being pinned, but they told her that she was very lucky, as most do need surgery

What a pain, so sorry

Shell, Debih's youngest, L, had a similar thing - she will know the pain. The consultant showed me the old and new x-rays. The initial one showed nothing, the ones today showed a break right across the scaphoid. I have had a fractured scaphoid before (there is apparently a difference between a fracture and a break) and it took about 13 weeks to come right.

The consultant, Mr Ha*er was very apologetic about the whole thing.

When I was first x-rayed (Nov) there should have been a follow-up appointment, but because of the complications I suffered (infection and hospitalisation) it did not happen. That is why I have not been able to get things seen to - the other things were more important to getting me well, and rightly so.

At least I am now back in the system and being looked out for.
