I think it's a goose.

The householders at the rear of us, who have a longish garden, appear to have acquired one over the weekend. It's in a metal cage - a run I suppose - with a blue plastic paddling pool at one end. It's difficult to judge dimensions at a distance but the cage doesn't seem all that high or wide .... we wondered what the heck it was this morning because it was sat in the paddling pool splashing itself. Before we realised it was in a cage, we thought it might have been a wayward swan.

Anyway, I don't know how the new addition will do down with that household's two Alsatians ....

I'd probably keep an eye on the situation and see just how much space the poor goose or duck does get to walk around and if there's shelter from rain, wind and sun provided. And if need be I'd contact the RSPCA who will (or rather should) go out and either confirm all is OK, advise on correct way to keep such an animal or (if necessary) remove it from what may be totally unsuitable living conditions

I agree with Ria Geese need space, they are large birds with a lot of energy/aggression to work off.

People keep them to guard things, like guard dogs!!!

Could it be an aylesbury duck? They are quite big, but very friendly. I am thinking more duck with the water thing, as I don't think geese are fond of water? I'd love a goose

Well, MM, interesting observation, and the jury is now out - is it a domesticated goose or an Aylesbury duck? Both are white, but the beak colour seems to be orange for the goose, yellow for the duck.

Mrs O says that on the basis that it does seem to have an elongated neck and that it's (and I quote) "a very big bugger", she thinks it's a goose. I'm not voting until I've seen it in the daylight again.

They refilled the paddling pool with a hose tonight and seem to have extended the cage, as best as we can tell by the illumination of their security light. I am not sure if there is "shelter" though, but maybe the cage / run is still a "work in progress".

Whatever it is, I hope it isn't noisy, or Master O will be reaching for his shotgun ....

Nah Workingman...........the only ostrich I know of on VV has long legs
