I forgot to tell you about my trip to A&E yesterday

Just leaving work and my phone buzzed to tell me I had a voicemail. It was school who rang about 20 minutes before I got the message to say that L had hurt her arm. A friend had twisted it behind her back.

As it was the same one that she fractured and she was complaining that it was really hurting I thought it best to take her down to A&E (we have a minor injuries department at our local cottage hospital so it isn't a particularly traumatic experience. Unlike A&E at the main hospital where you can be waiting for hours to be seen).

The nurse decided that it was probably just sprained and decided that it didn't need xraying - mainly because their xray department only opens on a part time basis and was shut. Which would have meant a trip to the main hospital A&E department!

So it is all bandaged up and we were told if it was still hurting on Wednesday to go back (xray is open 9-5 on Wednesdays!).

This morning she says it is still hurting and that she is getting pins and needles along her thumb and wrist - just like she did when the scaphoid was fractured......................

She can hang on til tomorrow!

What it was fractured last time they missed it first, which is easy to do when its the scaphoid bone! They xrayed it at the local cottage hospital and said that they thought it was okay but strapped it up. Then a couple of day later we got a phone call from the main hospital to say that it was fractured so could I take her in.

The scaphoid often doesnt show up for a few days if it is a fracture so it is often left for up to a week before they xray it. The nurse was pretty sure that it was just sprained as she was able to move everything - something she couldn't do last time.

I might take her in the morning if it is still hurting, rather than leaving it until the end of school.

So do I. Especially as its her writing hand! It didn't matter last time as she had it in plaster during the summer holidays.

I think L would know from the type of pain if it had gone again, the pins and needles might be because swelling has made the bandage a tight fit.

Still, another x-ray wont hurt.

If my child had been injured by a "friend" twisting their arm behind their back, I would have had words with said friend and parents of friend. I hope it isn't broken Debih.
