Ally's thread about the 'you know what' and people commenting on what they don't like made me think back and giggle

Many years ago I was flat hunting and went to look at a room that was up for renting. A friend that I was staying with at the time came with me as she knew the area better than I did. Much to my delight when I walked into the kitchen of the house there were two cats and I was ready to move in there and then . I then realised they were playing with a dead frog they had caught - which didn't phase me much but.....

I knew my friend had (and still has) a frog phobia, but little did I know that she'd also inherited her mothers phobia of cats - oh dear! She saw the scene in the kitchen - her two worst nightmares in one place - let out a loud screach, grabbed me by the arm and marched me out of the house - all within about 10 seconds - whilst the people renting out the room just looked on totally bemused as they hadn't realised what was going on.

I did go back in and explain (and look at the room).

My friend and I did have a good giggle about it afterwards

Mine is 'Maggots' They haunt me! I was a teenager and was woken early in the morning by this plopping sound coming from the tiled fireplace in my bedroom. I got out of bed in my barefeet to see what the noise was and there were regiments of 'Maggots' marching along the grouting. There was thousands of them like an army plopping down the chimney, getting into line and following their comrades. I was hysterical. So was my Mum armed with mop bucket and dettol as she tried to drown them. They had to get somebody with a ladder round to hoist the decomposing bird out of the chimney. I wouldn't sleep in my room for days after that.

Years later I was waitressing in our pub. It had been a sweltering hot August day and I'd got the cheese board ready in the kitchen for the evening service charmingley garnished with celery, apple, walnuts. A table of diners asked for the cheese board and I presented it to them by lifting the glass dome cover to cut a piece of Stilton and as I moved the cheese a swarm of 'Maggots' came scurrying out of it and onto the board. In front of them! I blabbed some excuse about '....not being happy with the cheese...' and tore out of the restaurant into the kitchen and lay down on the floor screaming in an hysterical silent way! A Blue Bottle had found it's way onto the Stilton at some stage between fridge and cheeseboard and egged it!

The kitchen made up another cheeseboard for me and when I got back to the diners with the fresh one they said 'You really shouldn't have gone to all that trouble!' Oh yes I did

I am Phobic if I see a fly anywhere near food, be it at home or out. If I hear a Blue Bottle I come out all guns blazing!

Of course it's well known that I am also Phobic about the nest of Slow Worms in my back garden. They are a protected species but the only protection needed when one of them wriggles into my cottage is for me!

They are actually lizards but to me they are Snakes that Blink! Since I had a new back and front door that fit tight they don't seem able to Slither in.

I love frogs and toads but I am frightened of them as they hop and jump and could get up your skirt <fainted>

Mine is snakes, no idea why but I can't even look at a picture of one.

I also hate rats but I know why. Not long before we moved from our old house our security alarm went off and no amount of resetting it worked. John decided to see if there was a problem with the cable and sure enough, in the understairs cupboard where the cable ran from the main box to a sensor in the kitchen, it was broken...and there were holes in the plasterboard. Our joined on neighbour had been telling us that he'd had problems with rats so it was obvious that they'd now decided to pay us a visit. Poison was put down under the floorboards and the understairs cupboard was re-lined with plasterboard. It looked likely that they'd got into our neighbours house via a broken air vent which went into their understairs cupboard and from there they got through a hole in the floorboards and had the free run of underneath both houses Our neighbours heard them behind the cupboard plinths in their kitchen at times. The poison seemed to do it's job for a while but then we'd hear the tell-tale scratching and scurrying again - of course, until our neighbour sorted out the access route on his side of the house they were going to keep coming back. Anyway, one afternoon I decided to hoover before getting Joe from school - I had a few spare minutes. I opened the understairs cupboard and reached in to get the hoover and there in the cupboard was a rat staring back at me. I screamed blue murder and swore a lot before throwing the hoover back in and slamming the door. However I didn't throw the hoover far enough, the flexi hose was sticking out and the door wouldn't shut. After doing the dance of panic around the hall, still screaming and swearing, I had to open the door again and shove the hose in properly.

Just to add, I remember your slow worm problem Fugi. Eek!

My one big fear is cockroaches - they are the vilest most horribleness things on this planet.

A lot of things I don't like but can sort of deal with OK (without making too much of an embarrassing fuss that is) but cockroaches - eeewwwwww. I'll beat Ursain Bolt's 100m record in my mad dash out the door any day.



Fugi - your maggot experience would make anyone detest them forever more! poor you!

spiders....or anything with dangley legs like spinning jennies, just can't stand anything that skitter about on more than two legs.

The one thing for me is a cockroach.
