any one have any idea how much it costs to change a lock? It's an old aluminium door with a Yale type lock.

Shell, I looked here: http://www.locksonline.co.uk/acatalog/M ... ocks-.html just for the locks, figuring that to change one could not be too hard...... WHAT A PRICE!

How much a locksmith will charge is anyone's guess.

Grumpy would do it for a beer

And he's said, being a carpenter, if you just need to change the locking cylinder, not a lot. But if you need to change the whole thing - a blummin' lot, because you'd have to find the same make.

Does that make sense?

If it's an emergency call-out - one of these 24 hour mobile locksmiths - don't expect much change from £200 (parts and labour) if it's a Pvc door lock 'n sliding bolt mechanism that has to be repaired. We had a spring go recently in a 8 year old lock, and a complete new mechanism had to be fitted because of its age. Took the chap around an hour, including levelling the door against the frame, as it had sagged slightly, and it was that which had caused the lock to be out of alignment, so the extra tension had apparently caused spring to fail, rendering the lock useless.

There is a very good shop which will also fit locks about four miles away. We have recently replaced the lock on our front door. The original was over 20 years old and had given good service. They had to order it which only took two days. There was a problem locking it from the outside. Phoned them and they explained what was wrong.

If you can take the old lock off but still leave the door secure. Then take the lock to a local shop which sells security items--not B& Q. Ask them if they will fit the new one and what the charge would be.
