A Wine question

I thought I would put this on here as it gets more traffic
We are having a bunch of our tango friends next week for drinkies etc. Mr L and I are not wine drinkers really, so can anyone advise us please? We just want to get a few bottles of red and white, but the choice is so wide I don't know where to start. We just want something decent that is not too pricey , but doesn't make your toes curl either Supermarket specials are fine by us, we aren't snobby

I know what I like but know nothing about wine.

If I am looking for wine for something special I go and hunt the wine man out at the supermarket. They are usually pretty knowledgeable and have a decent idea about what goes well with what.

Providing you get the decent member of staff and not the spotty Saturday lad!

M&S house wines are very good.

You can't beat a Shiraz for Red Loz and maybe a Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio for white. You don't have to pay a fortune, for any of it

That said I am no wine expert

If the wine is for drinking with nibbles, rather than a full meal, I would go for the mid-range as they tend to be the most 'sociable', in general. The 'sippers' are at the top end and 'pre-loaders', before a club night out, are at the cheaper end.

But......... you pays your money.......... some of the 3 for £10 deals are a real bargain.

Shiraz can be a bit strong for people not used to it. Merlot is nice and gentle and fruity and a more middle of the road red. I like a good Cab Sauv and Pino Grigio personally, but some people turn up their noses at those two wines.

Have you an Aldi nearby? You can't beat their prices and their cheap wines are certainly not cheap content. Some of them have won awards.

I was also going to suggest Merlot for the red, for the same reason, and I am very partial to Pinot Grigio, I only drink white. Sainsbury's do very good ones, often on offer

I think I'll go with the Merlot then and still thinking about the white...hmmmmm.....

I'm a white wine drinker too and usually am happy with a Pinot Grigio, a Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc, any of those for around a fiver or thereabouts are very nice
