this should maybe be on health but wanted more people to see and give me any tips..........
from reading online it appears my child has a 'vocal tic', and it is driving me INSANE!
For about a year on and off she has done a throat clearing thing, sometimes she does it a lot, other times hardly any but my dad was always aware of it..............now she has started sniffing constantly but just a small sniff and a 'hhmmm' kind of hum noise and it is CONSTANT!!
I have spoken to her and asked if she is worried about anything, thought maybe because she doesn't see her dad (her choice) but she said no, nothing is bothering her, she knows she can speak to me...............she will sit and for instance last night I went to the loo, could hear her, and maybe 20 sniffs and 'mmm'.
I have tried to ignore it, but I struggle as it is so bloody annoying!!
anyone any experience of this? dont' see the point of going to GP, last time I took her for the throat clearing they tried to say it was an allergy and gave me anti histamines which funnily enough didnt help!
arghhh!!
poll xx

Is she actually aware that she's doing it Poll?
If she is..maybe have a wee chat and perhaps a reward if she manages to lessen it day by day until she's not doing it any more?
I wish I could be more help.
xx

Sorry Poll, can't help on that at all xx
But I developed a lisp, when I was younger - apparently - and spoke weirdly for quite a while. I was about 5 - I think - and it went when I was about 8 - also apparently,
I really can't remember doing it.

thanks folks xxx
Aggers will have a read of that link, thank you!
Just sat and spoke to her again as it was getting really bad, a few days ago she said she didn't know she was doing it and I started sniffing loudly or clearing my throat when she done it to make her aware................she got upset as I said to her I would speak to my GP at my appointment next week, she told me she does know she is doing it ???!!
Asked her again if she is worrying, and I think she has been worried a bit as I have been worrying about a few things lately and she has obviously picked it up from me, have reassured her all is ok, not to worry and she said she will try and stop it.......................
watch this space - hope she does as I was cracking up!!
xx

Poll you know your lovely daughter better than anyone and if you think she is worrying about something, she probably is. She may not even realise it though.
You have a wonderful relationship with Amy and she knows she can tell you anything, but on some level she may not want to worry you, so won't tell you what is on her mind. The last thing to do though is to try and push her to tell you as it might make things worse. Maybe you can talk about what you think could be worrying her in a round about way, maybe through play...draw pictures together, sand play anything creative really.
It may just be 'one of those things' and eventually stop happening. If you are worried though maybe see you GP just for a chat about your concerns, but without Amy.

thank you Loz, yeah you are right, have had a little chat with her and she got a bit upset, maybe with all the change from me going from uni to working, routines have changed and then I have been worried about money and said to her we have to be really careful, she has maybe taken it that things are really bad - which they are not, but I am a worrier.
I must try and stop worrying and letting it show, going to be positive and upbeat from now on and see if it helps, I of course feel guilty now thinking its my fault she has been doing this
Positive and upbeat is my new motto...............
thank you all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
