Micks birthday "cake"

I have finished his "cake". Its a little messier looking than I hoped it would be as I struggled with the joining seam but here it is.

Its a chocolate smash cake. Just a chocolate shell filled with a variety of sweeties. He needs to smash the shell and out come the sweets.

It was easy enough to make (although a little messy) as I bought a giant cupcake silicon mould but I did find it difficult joining the two shells together as they didn't match up exactly. But it tastes nice (I used proper chocolate rather than cooking chocolate) - I have been nibbling the bits of chocolate I shaved off the edges.

It was so ridiculously simple to make, although rather messy and it does use rather a lot of chocolate!!

I have never fancied buying one of those giant cupcake moulds as the thought of one makes me feel rather sick. But then I saw a smash cake on a website somewhere so ordered one from ebay.

You just pour melted chocolate into the mould and let it run all round the sides, let it dry and add a couple more layers. I struggled with the edges though and therefore they weren't thick enough or straight enough to match up exactly - thus leaving gaps at the join.

I've seen some done with a dark chocolate base and green chocolate (you can buy coloured chocolate drops especially for baking) on the top and then skittles stuck on to look like baubles - the perfect xmas tree smash cake.

He's not a massive fan of cake but he loves chocolate and sweeties (Haribo's, etc) so I have filled the bottom part of the mould with little bags of sweets and some skittles. He needs to whack it to break the shell. I bought eating chocolate rather than cooking chocolate so that it will taste better. I only used the cheap bars from Lidl - I think I probably used around 500g of chocolate in total.

LOL. In his dreams.

I'm hoping he'll be really suprised. He knows I am making something as I had to keep sending him out of the kitchen on Thursday night when I was giving the mould its first coat of chocolate.

I would be surprised if he hadn't guessed that chocolate is involved as both myself and the kitchen seem to have been covered in it.
