TV tonight 10.45. The Cruel Cut.

Damn. I fell asleep and missed the programme. Repeat on the 11th on .channel 4.
Female mutilation was first banned here I believe in the 60's
The practice is still rife. I lived in countries where this barbaric practice took place with children as young as six being mutilated, no anaesthetic, being held cruelty by a few Aunts and another supposed Aunt doing the barbaric deed. The child's screams were ignored and she would pass out. Thousands of children have suffered this disgusting practice here and this barbaric act is still continuing we learned of the impact from Birmingham Hospital where these children are taken in agony following developing infections. This disgusting practice I was told by an Egyptian friend is to ensure the woman will have no pleasure from intercourse and will remain faithful to her husband.

I watched something similar, many years ago Kate. Made me cry then and I couldn't watch it last night.

Barbaric isn't the word to describe it Tonicha, the traumatic effect on the child is horrendous. It was in the 1980's
That this wicked practice was illegal here, not one individual of the thousands mutilated since has been prosecuted to date. Government should be ashamed as should every authority in the land. Sick society that approves of this mutilation, what kind of people are allowed to enter this country, better here maybe for the youngsters who hopefully will rebel against this female mutilation, it should be openly discussed in the classroom,more than can be said for the authorities who pretend it isn't happening, and who ignore these youngsters plight.

It was an uncomfortable programme to watch, but I stuck with it.

One very disturbing moment lingers....

Leyla, the campaigner against FGM, turned the argument on its head and took to the streets with a petition to make it legal. She explained that it was part of her culture and that it was thought to "cleanse" the women and make them more stable in marriage. People signed up FFS!

It broke her heart and she thought that it was because the UK had become so PC that people were afraid to challenge other cultures and cultural activities for fear of being branded racist. How true.

I can understand your horror that this cruel and barbaric act is taking place in our country, and the fact that
the authorities do nothing about it.

Surely the hospitals who deal with the poor children who suffer with complications due to this barbaric practice
should notify the police, and the police should take appropriate action? There is no doubt in my mind that the
failure to do so is all because those who should be taking action are afraid of being accused of racism.

Let's hope that this TV documentary will stimulate some appropriate response from those who are failing in their duties.

It was a Pakistani MP a Muslim who brought to light the children's plight being taken to hospital following mutilation. I take my hat off to him. Where are the authorities, teachers, councils, social workers who are and were obviously aware of what is going on.
Sounds like "We don't want to get involved" They should be ashamed of themselves.
