I can never really understand how the forecasters often struggle to get the forecast right for the week ahead but then go on to tell us what we can expect for the next few months.

If I remember rightly they forecast us the "worst winter on record" last year - and in fact it wasn't really all that bad compared to a few years previously!

Couldn't agree more. Yesterday, I met up with an od school friend for a match at Stourbridge. This involves a fair bit of walking, so I monitored the BBC Weather site:

Thursday: Stourbridge - dry, Birmingham - occasional light rain. :?
Friday morning: Stourbridge - occasional light rain, Birmingham - heavy rain. :(
Friday evening: Stourbridge - heavy rain, Birmingham - monsoon. :o

So I went dressed for a monsoon. Result? Light drizzle when I set off, then dry for the rest of the day apart from a couple of brief showers in the second half of the match ....

I know weather forecasting isn't an exact science, but really!

So I'll believe a cold winter when I see it. Mind you, awful lot of berries on the rowans and hips this autumn. Now where's me fircone ....
