I've received a Christmas card from a couple who were dear friends of my late mum but I've exchanged Christmas cards with them and birthday card with the wife for years. I haven't seen them for a few years, though, although I knew the husband had had cancer but fully recovered. In the card was a note from the wife saying that the husband has been diagnosed, earlier in the year, with a tumour on the brain and is paralysed down one side. She said he's still very poorly. That's all I know, I don't know if he's at home or what the prognosis is, I can only guess.

I don't feel it's appropriate, now I know, to send a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year card. What do you think? Should I just send a letter or buy a blank Christmas card and write something like "thinking of you" (although you usually write that when someone has died). They are very private so I can only guess he is very poorly for them to have mentioned it. Maybe they're trying to carry on as usual so perhaps I should send an ordinary card. Really not sure what to do

If it was me, I would buy one of those nice "Thinking of you" cards and write a little message in there. You could just touch on the season by saying something like "at this special time" or something similar.

Yes, I think I'd send a Thinking Of You card too, I've seen some Christmas-design ones in some of the card shops. I think it was Clintons where I got some as we've had a couple of losses in the extended family this year and I wanted their close families to know that they were very much in our thoughts rather than sending a bouncy happy full of the joys of the season with glitter on card - if that makes sense.
