A Funeral

Postby Fugitive » 26 Jul 2013, 09:26

Going to a dear friend's funeral today. The service is Humanist and I was asked to write something about him by his widow and read which I was happy about as he was a great bloke and we used to call him 'The Old Scrote' so looking forward to using this in my piece celebrating his life. He had a good one and died at eighty-six. Then I discovered the service is being conducted by the same Humanist Minister who held the service for my Son-in-Law five years ago.

I am just hoping the enormous sadness we all felt at S.I.L's service doesn't come back at me as it was hard to Celebrate his short life. I've been practicing reading it out loud all morning so now I'll be glad when it's done and I can hit the Champagne and nibbles.

Oh I do hope it goes well Fugi. Practising lots of times is definitely a good idea, the familiarity somehow damps down the emotion a little.
It does tend to come back to you, the best you can do is try to focus entirely on the Old Scrote (!) and all your memories of him

Me too Fugi (((((((((((((((x)))))))))))))))))

We used a Humanist Celebrant for both my parents' funerals, the same one, and as they were only five months apart it was quite hard at Mum's as memories of Dad's kept coming back to me, I was sat in the same seat as I had at Dad's only this time I was holding my sister's hand instead of Mum's....... I read at both as my sister just couldn't face it......"If" by Rudyard Kipling for Dad (it so suited him) and a Shakespearean Sonnet at Mum's which was my sister's choice.......

Massive vibes for today, will be thinking of you and hoping all goes well {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{x}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Thank you all. Yes, I read at S.I.L and at my Mum's and I was brave for everyone else especially for them. The same Humanist Minister is going to be hard because he's a bit too kind and sympathetic, if you get me, and funny he offered to read my piece for me if I couldn't face it and I can hardly see him saying 'The Old Scrote' out loud. He didn't know my friend anyway so he just wouldn't get it! :twisted:

I really like humanist funerals (if that is the right word - but you know what I mean). They seem to be much more personal.

Hope all goes well Fugi.
