A particularly bad week

Postby Suff » 12 Jul 2013, 11:00

My week started badly as I had managed to develop a cold from one of the guys at work who was ill last week. I haven't had more than 3 hours sleep any night this week until last night.

I've also been working long hours because we're doing some key migrations at work and things out of my control are not working.

Yesterday I was booked to take the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen and I got to sleep at 5am. Had to check out of the hotel, work was buzzing because people were having problems and nobody had the time to stop and actually allow me to analyse the problem, just time to moan about it.

I was badly blocked up had to take some Sudafed to clear my system out, but this, of course, has paracetamol in it. I had woken up with a serious migraine but couldn't take solpadene to fix it as I really needed to clear my sinuses and that medication was on my desk.

Finally I got to work, migraine, feeling like hell, people all thinking their issue is worse than mine and trying to get out the door by 11am so I could load the bike and get to the ferry at a decent hour.

Finally got away, burning with a temperature (thankfully hot weather) and headed to the ferry. I managed some fluids on the way and whilst waiting. I decided that I had to have a cabin as there was no way I would have been able to ride home with the sleep I'd had. Fortunately that was only £26. Then they called me out to the car park 30 minutes before I could have my solpadene and made me wait 1 hour before I could get on the ferry and into the cabin.

However I was the first on the ferry. Got some water, a sandwich and other fluids and headed for the cabin. 3 solpoadene later (Yes I know it says two on the packet but this was a "3" issue), food down my neck and I managed about 2 hours sleep before my coughing and general distress worke me.

We arrived in Caen at 21:40 and I got off at 21:50. On the ferry I was boiled and sweating, when we got off it was clear skies and freezing. I was shaking. A little way down the road I stopped and added clothes till I was like a polar bear and headed on.

The journey took 4.5 hours and was fairly uneventful. It was after 3am when I got to bed. Now I'm sitting here feeling my body slowly succumb to the cold again. Ears blocked, chest blocked, feel like hell.

I can't wait for this week to end.

On a better note, I fixed almost all the "Pre owned" issues with the bike this week and the performance was excellent the whole journey. The trip back, during the day, in the sun, on the 21st, might actually be enjoyable.

We have weeks like these Suff, when nothing but nothing goes right. The absolute worst thing about them is when things are out of our control.

At least you have a week or so to get back to normal, health wise. Take time to chill and down a few beers - they should help. ;) :D

Mrs S is suggesting that if I'm not fit to do heavy DIY work in the house, then I should not have bothered coming home.

Charming.

Oh Suff, I hate it when I get a bad cold so you have my sympathy.

If I feel one coming on I take a dose of echinacea right away then every two hours for the rest of the day, then a 1000 mg dose of vitamin C at bedtime (only at bedtime as it leaves your body as soon as you have a wee, so if taken at bedtime it is in your system longer) and a spoonful of Nightnurse. Nightnurse knocks me out so I get a good nights sleep and usually the symptoms have gone by the morning. Doesn't work so well if the cold has set in though.

I do feel for you Suff. A heavy cold and a fever is bad enough when you're in your own home and your own bed, but having to travel through it for such a long time must have been a nightmare. I'm sure Mrs Suff was joking really. Take care and spoil yourself for a few days until you're better.

Sorry to hear of your suffering, Suff.

Touch wood, but I haven't had a cold since we moved here two years ago.
Whether that's because the local air suits me, or because I've been taking
a zinc and vitamin C tablet every day. It might be a good idea if you took
them, too.

Hope you feel better soon.
