What was a great idea that turned out to be not so great?

Mine was the idea to walk to Ventemiglia in Italy from Menton in France, to see the famous market there.
We had an old book and Ventemiglia looked to be just over the border from Menton, a couple of miles tops.
I should have remembered that maps in old books aren't always to scale.
Menton is 11.5 kilomenters from Ventemiglia, (7 and a bit miles).
Not a bad walk I suppose but my friend and I were the only two doing it on a hot summers day.
Anyway, we eventually got to Ventemiglia. To find out that it wasn't market day..
We came back on the train!

Buying a Reliant Scimitar GTE from a couple of scallies from York Road. Got it home and the rear suspension promptly collapsed. i spent three years lifting the fibreglass body off and repairing the chassis. Took it for its MOT and it failed!.

We were moving house at that time so I had to get rid because I didn't have the time nor funds to carry on. Somebody got a bargain as the repairs left were only minor.

Cromwell, re Ventimiglia. Did you walk the road where part of it was a sheer drop into the sea? A few of us had been in Turin for Italia 80 and were advised by the police to leave following crowd trouble. We got down to Ventimiglia and were heading for the South of France camping. That road frightened us all to death.

Getting up late on a Saturday morning and fighting with Mrs S until mid day and then deciding we would strike the tent and walk the Lairig Gru from Braemar to Aviemore.

One of the longest and most gruelling days I've done. We arrived Well after midnight with Mrs S having fallen on tree roots in the rain and damaged her knee and me carrying both backpacks.

At least we had a second car and a tent set up at the other end.
