I am baking bread - again.

A large loaf from the big boys is now £1.40 and I have to split it into two - one half for the freezer and one for use - otherwise I end up feeding most to the birds. A small loaf is only 20p cheaper so not worth it. I avoid the cheap loaves as they are full of fillers and other stuff that I am not sure about.

So, I am baking.

Some years ago I had a bread maker and it came with a recipe book. I have found one for a country loaf that gets me two medium loaves from one batch of dough - one to cook and one for the freezer - using 500gm of flour some salt, sugar, yeast, butter and warm water. Funny thing is that the best loaves are from the dough in the freezer.

The strong bread flour is £1.30 for a 1.5kg bag so that's six loaves for a total of about £1.70. Bargain!.

Oooh delicious!! 8-) I wouldn't dare bake my own these days - too tempting to scoff the lot! :oops: :lol:

Yep.
I’d be standing here with butter and a knife, waiting for it to come out of the oven.

I would fail a the first fence,

I do not have a baking tin for bread.

But I will join the queue with my knife and butter.

I loved baking my own bread during lock down, but sadly - same as most here it seems - it's my downfall and I was eating far too much of it and rapidly put on far too much weight :-(

A friend sent me a recipe for a no-knead bread and it was amazing and I really think I should make some again and then freeze the slices once baked; they're yummy when toasted. Currently I tend to buy the Jason's sour dough breads from the supermarket; not cheap at £2.00 a loaf but very yummy. However, obviously lots of stuff in in that probably shouldn't, because it keeps for much longer than it should ;)

Seems fresh bread is a "trigger" for many of us - no wonder.they pipe the smell through supermarkets :oops: :cute: :lol:

Well, the first loaf was almost a success. Despite the broken mixer I managed to get it kneaded, risen and knocked back then into a tin for a final prove. Unfortunately I got the temperature of the oven wrong - it's a counter top mini fan oven and I didn't adjust for the fan so it was a bit hot! However, with a bit of tweaking I did manage to save it. No photos though, as most of it is now eaten. ;) :lol: :oops: :oops: :oops:

Ria, your bread maker idea... I did have one, but as the years have gone bye and I gathered more stuff there is now no worktop space for one, hence the hand mixer, but thanks.
