The Cost of Turkey

Jo on t'other thread wrote:Someone will collect my Dad*, he’ll have his dinner and ask where the sprouts were from, then ask where the turkey was from and then say (and this has become a saying in our house when something’s cheap**) “it’s alright though isn’t it!”
**Not saying the turkey’s cheap, it’s from Tesco but if it’s not from M&S it’s apparantly cheap. (Which reminds me of another saying in our house which also comes from something my parents always said - “it’s from Marks’s, it’s a good one”).

I laughed at this comment, but it also resonated with me.

Having gobbled at the amount we had to pay for a boxed cooked gammon joint (1.1kg) in Waitrose - £25 (I was expecting £15 tops :| ) - I grumbled to Mrs O that we'd not buy our traditional turkey crown there, I'd blinkin' well see what I could get at Aldi. The turkeys hadn't actually hit the shelves in Waitrose at the time of that visit, anyway.
Not a lot of choice at Aldi, but did source a Two Bird Meat Crown for £19.99 (again 1.1kg and reduced from £22 something). I don't usually like going for these "concocted" mixed meat joints as they seem completely unnatural to me, but any port in a storm .....
Visited Waitrose again last Friday, and the festive turkeys were in store. Picked up one about the same weight (1.3kg from memory) and looked at the price ......

£49.83 !!!

As I am on my own I will just have a chicken breast. I got two from the butchers in Chorley.

I paid justunder £18.00. It included two chicken berasts, bacon, pork loin steaks, lamb chops and sausages. Will keep megoing till next year.

I never buy meat or fish from supermarkets. I get it fresh from a butcher in Chorley

I bought a beef joint a month ago in Sainsbury's when they were half price, a big turkey crown a fortnight ago in Tesco hugely reduced on the Clubcard, and a small gammon joint last week also half price on the Clubcard. They all went into the big freezer in the garage, although I got the gammon out last night as I'm cooking that tonight, for cold meat.

I also got the large turkey crown from Tesco, I think it was £18 with the Clubcard discount?

My Tesco delivery yesterday came to £74.61 but once I’d taken off the Clubcard vouchers I’d built up over the year I paid just £1.61 :D

That's the one Jo! :D Well done on the vouchers, I used some of mine to buy Denby serving dishes to match my new crockery, under their doubling up the value scheme, and had the rest taken off my Christmas shop. :D
