I suppose it's a sign of an affluent society, but I haven't had a pair of shoes repaired for donkey's years.
When I was a lad, my father used to sole and heel all our shoes. I can remember all the special tools he used.
In our town we had a lovely old gentleman who had a shoe repair shop. I remember how he used to handle
the shoes with such loving care. When he was nailing soles on, he would put a handful of tacks in his mouth,
and eject them one at a time, as he hammered them in with, not a hammer, but a flat piece of steel. I spent
many a time watching him through his window.
Happy days !!!

There is a guy in the Merrion Centre in Leeds who will repair anything - shoes, handbags, boots, wallets - you name it, he'll have a go. He is damned good and I use him often. He even repairs things that other places say are irreparable because.....

I get my boots repaired as and when they need it and I have a couple of favourite pairs of shoes that I have reheeled now and again.
I have handbags repaired too.
I have only ever had one pair of the girls shoes repaired - it just isn't worth it for the amount of time they wear them for.

That's the thing Debih, in my experience children outgrow shoes long before they wear them out
WM there is a little repair shop in an alley behind one of the main streets in Gloucester - he also repairs almost anything, including handbags - we used to take in handbags sometimes from the shop, when customers needed a repair
