A storm was what I was expecting

But not the house moving in an earthquake. We had 2 about an hour ago. The one we really felt though was the 3.9 located 6kms deep, centered about 10kms from me.

No damage, everyone's ok, but I don't mind telling you guys it did shake me a little bit. I'm down playing it on fb, as I'm just waiting for the snarky comments from the Christchurch contingent.

Our friends in wooden foundation and on pole houses felt it a lot worse, one even had things shake off her bookshelf.

I can imagine how frightful it must be. I've only experienced a minor one
that rattled all the crockery in the cupboards, and that was unnerving.

Glad you're OK.

You must have been very frightened Weka. I hope that was it! My manicurist was in Christchurch during the earthquake in a shopping mall and told me her story. Houses on poles and wooden foundations are to be avoided! Take care.

Wood with wood would be 80% of our homes here.
I wasn't really frightened, more a huge surge of adrenaline that left me shaking for a few minutes.
I heard a roar come first, like a big gale force wind, then the house lurched like it had been ht by a car, yet when I looked outside it was still. No wind, then I noticed things wobbling, and the house was still wiggling, that's when I realised it was an earthquake. Only a little one, I've been in worse.

The kids did notice, but they were too busy dancing to the wiggles to really notice.
