See, I'm not just a pretty face!!!
We are off to our friends for dinner tomorrow and I was in charge of the pudding. She is doing a paella so I was going to do something Spanish themed but I couldn't find anything I fancied doing. Then I remembered the Kransekake (pronounced kranzeycaca) pan that I bought from Lakeland in the sale.
It was pretty easy to make - I made the batter (ground almonds, icing sugar and egg whites) yesterday and kept it in the fridge. Then today I rolled the batter out into long sausages, finger thick and put them in the special pans. (photo is a little blurred - sorry).
Then baked them for 10 minutes, left them to cool and built them up using icing sugar. Then stuck a load of rice paper daisies on them.
It isn't perfect - I know now why it is important to get the sausages the same thickness. But for a first attempt I am really pleased with it. I might try and get some indoor sparklers to go in the top - its a shame that it doesn't go to a point at the top really - I might try that next time by creating something by hand.
Oh - and a Kransekake is a Danish dessert. It means "wreath cake" and is traditionally for Christmas.
Edited to add - I have no idea what it tastes like!!!! I have tried the raw batter (its called a batter but is a dough really) which tastes slightly like marzipan (obviously - it is made with almonds) but haven't tasted it cooked. I thought it would go very nicely washed down with a glass of my home made amaretto.
