Woody the woodpecker ...

Having got used to the pigeon who Woooooos seductively down our chimney  , and the pair of blackbirds who regularly go off like an old-fashioned telephone and an ambulance siren respectively, this morning there was a tremendous racket from the back garden and Woody, our resident European green woodpecker, was perched on the fence cackling madly at the world. Off he flew; five minutes later he was back and letting rip again, head back and beak thrust high into the air. At one point, he nearly fell off the fence backwards! This went on for about half an hour .....

Unsure if he was staking his territory  or it was a mating ploy  :? .......

Oooo don't talk to me about birds....we have starlings nesting in the roof and it's driving me potty! I have a phobia about birds anyway so for them to be that close....*shudders*

[[Gal]] ......tough luck, starlings can be both noisy and messy ... :| We often have a flock of them around here, "doing" the front lawns, but they must be nesting elsewhere.

Thankfully, nothing nesting in our eaves, as far as I'm aware.

Woody isn't exactly cuddly like his TV counterpart, if you can remember right back to the "Woody the Woodpecker Show". :D He's a big, chunky bird, and the stand-out red and black head markings make him look slightly ferocious. In human terms, he's the bouncer outside your local nightclub ...

Your bouncer comment is quite apt as I always think of pushing shoving quarrelsome starlings as a rowdy bunch of youngsters drinking and fighting in town on a Friday night

I've heard a woodpecker in the woods recently, I haven't seen him/her though but I always think of the cartoon so I'm fully expecting blue and white feather and a cheeky face.
