What's that noise?

What's that noise?

I was in my little office on Sunday afternoon when I heard this scraping sound from the roof... We have lots of Crows and Magpies round here and they often sit on the ridge tiles of the roofs. When some of them take off they sort of slide/hop down the roof before taking flight  so that is what I thought the sound was.

Monday evening there is a knock on the door and there is S from downstairs with two huge lumps of concrete in his hands. The roof is falling apart and these were just two of the bits to have come loose.

When we went round the back there was a piece about a foot long stuck vertically in the ground just next to their back door. It could have killed someone.

A man with a ladder is coming round to fix everything asap, according to the landlords. I am being very careful when I go out and being very gentle when I open or close the door. :)

Yes, not good ..... make sure they definitely repair that grouting under the ridge tiles, as if any of them get lifted off in a heavy wind, they could fly anywhere .... looking at that photo, the landlords are possibly lucky it hasn't happened already . :?

Very fortunate they did not fall on anybody. A problem I have every time there is a storm but with thirteen blocks to look after Incidentally they are supposed to have a scaffold to work on roofs now, elf `n safety y`know. Hope the rain does not come through.

WM,
Have just seen your post. Very scary.
When was the roof last inspected?
Regarding ridge tiles, there are plastic ones which can be nailed onto wood underneath. Much lighter and more secure than tiles.
The Working at Height Regulations cover the work on roofs. I do not think the HSE would approve of the work being carried out from a ladder.
There should also be protection to stop any objects falling down onto persons entering or leaving the building while the work is in progress.
Has the landlord informed his insurance company about these near misses?
What qualifications, or experience does the firm who are going to do the work have. I would not like a self employed person working on his own to do this.
Hope it gets fixed soon and properly

Cruiser, Ped, it is a rented property and the landlords are sending round a proper roofing firm to do the job. The remark about a man with a ladder was just me being light hearted/headed. ;)

The earliest they can come is the weekend and we are forecast rain and strong winds between now and then so fingers very firmly crossed.
