Fantastic day

I've just had the most fantastic day bird watching on Tiritiri matangi. It's a wildlife sanctuary just off the coast (all 4kms) from auckland. There are some very rare birds there. I really wanted to see a wood pigeon, a saddleback, but really really wanted to see a takahe. There are only 200 odd of these birds remaining, and for 50 odd years they were thought to be extinct, till they were rediscovered, then entered into a breeding program.
Well, I saw not 1, but 3, including a chick, and had to fight them for my lunch!! Truly magical!

Wow that does sound fantastic!
The whole stretch we refer to as the marshes, where the sea wall is, is an absolute haven for birds - and birdwatchers.
We're not very good at identifying them all but do enjoy it :)

Did you get some good photos? And did your little ones enjoy it?

I didn't think you'd taken them because otherwise you'd have posted that you ran quickly through the sanctuary, birds fluttering everywhere, and then ended up in a soft play centre

Shall look forward to the photos :D

That sounds lovely, but wood pigeons? I presume they are not the same ones as I have by the hundred in my garden?

I look forward to a photo of a takahe
