Hello from the snow!

We are having a wonderful time Friday was long with a very early start, but we enjoyed the train journey from Milan to Tirano, a lot of it alongside Lake Como. Our hotel was very nice, perfect for a one night stopover. We ate early as we were seriously flagging by then, he was in bed by 7pm although I managed to make it to 8.30 Yesterday's train journey on the Bernina Express to St Moritz (google it) was nothing less than spectacular. We had a carriage to ourselves for a lot of it, so could change from side to side for the different views. Our St Moritz hotel met us at the station, the hotel is lovely, really comfy, but the room is so hot that we have turned off the radiator and have the window open most of the time!
It was a lovely sunny day, so we headed off to walk on the lake and see the racecourse, great fun. When we checked in, the hotel offered us half board at a very good rate considering the cost of food here, and we accepted and we are glad we did - it's a set menu but the food both evenings has been gorgeous with proper old fashioned properly trained waiters. Breakfast was yummy too, and another one tomorrow
The racing today was cancelled, we were not too surprised as we have been following the forecast for a couple of weeks and today was always going to have a lot of snow, although the problem is rising temperatures not being good for the ice on the lake. We are very good at going with the flow, so set off to explore. Saw a signpost for the Cresta Run which Edward was very interested in, so off we went, about 20 mins walk. It was set up many years ago by the English, when we got there a very friendly man told us what path to follow and best viewpoints etc. It's all still terribly English, commentary totally in English, none of this pandering for Germans or Italians and very calm and understated. Further along we came across some European bobsleigh comp, the commentary was in German, far too loud and excitable Eventually we found we had walked to the next little town and the snow had eased so we decided to go on a cable car which was exciting, and brought us to the set off point for several different ski runs! Such a buzz, really busy, neither of us has ever skiied or even experienced such snow. We had the obligatory hot chocolate, his had a hefty addition of rum before heading back down the mountain and getting a bus back here. Went for a yummy cake and cuppa before collapsing for a bit of a nap and then getting ready for dinner.
It's been such a fab day, seeing all the different winter sports, madmen going down the Cresta Run on trays, bobsleigh teams, little children whizzing along on skis, some amazing fur coats and lots and lots of snow, it has been snowing pretty steadily certainly since we went on the cable car.
So tomorrow is our final train journey to Zurich, and home tomorrow night. It has been so much more than we imagined, and actually, not having the races meant we did a whole lot than we would have done had they gone ahead.
