Glad you're sorted Shell :D

Frank, we had Virgin broadband, what they called National for customers without cable (pretty sure that they don't do it anymore), and with that we were getting 2 at best!! Even with Sky fibre we only average around 20.

Download speed on a test just now reads 2.8? Upload is 0.8. Obviously I'm just going off now, today, but done a few tests. I have a filter socket on my phone line as need that for the Sky connection, I think. I'm on TT website now while it offers suggestions for speedup ...

Ah! OK, you might know this already, but it is worth repeating.

You use TT for the internet so the very first connection to your router/modem should be via a micro-filter from the major inlet (wall socket) of your telephone line and not via any sort of extension cable. This first micro-filter is also where your phone is normally connected, especiallly DECT phones. Providing the micro-filter is working, and you might need to try another, that sorts that.

Now make sure your Sky box is not connected to broadband either by Ethernet or Wi-Fi and try that above simple configuration. I would simply turn off Sky at the mains power wall socket. I suspect that Sky is eating up your bandwidth if it is Sky+ or HD or On Demand or Anytime. As I understand things the modern boxes do not need a phone line, I might be wrong, but they definitely do need a broadband connection via your router.

Once Sky is out of the way do more speed tests.

Gal, I just thought of something else....

If removing Sky from the scenario (turning it off) ups your broadband speed you could then try the Fire stick in the TV and see how it now works.

But first to your request.

The easiest way to solve tech problems is to go back to basics, so here goes.

Disable Sky. Turn it of at the mains. Without power it is dead and not interfering.

Set up TT in its simplest form. Turn your laptop/computer and router off. Now with a micro-filter, aka splitter, in the first phone socket to your home - usually the one on the wall in the main area, connect a modem lead from the micro-filter, the squarish socket, to your router, a similar square socket. Take an Ethernet lead (usually blue or yellow) from port 1 on the router to your computer/laptop. Disconnect any other leads from the router apart from the power. The above connections might already be in place leaving you little to do. Turn your router and computer back on.

When Windows is ready to use right click on what looks like a TV screen on the right of the taskbar and go to Network and Sharing Centre. From the left-hand menu choose Change adaptor settings. With your cursor over Wireless Network Connection right click and choose Disable. On the Local Area Connection do the same but Enable it.

You are now wired in to TT with Wi-Fi out of the way. Now connect to the Internet using any browser and do speed tests.

Come back when ready.

Ho hum - gonna need tons of time to do all this!! I'll try later on, maybe Thursday before I get a good go. Trouble is, how do I then watch telly if Sky is off?? I don't know if I have an ethernet cable.....I used to when we had the big desktop upstairs but not sure what happened to it. And when online in future, would I have to keep the settings on my laptop amended to what you advised (above)? I'm really not at all savvy about this and have nobody to ask apart from you guys (Tom knows nowt lol)

PS is a router the same as a modem?
