Our council don't seem to have a problem with bin lids being open due to the bins being too full, and neither did the neighbouring council when we lived there.

Same here, Jo, so long as we don't get too silly they are happy to take 'overfilled' bins with open lids.

We just lob everything in the big bin - some people don't bother even recycling, even though we've got 2 plastic, one paper and 2 glass bins, right by the big one.

Ours are pretty good.
We have black sacks for general rubbish and clear ones for recycling.
They've come to the conclusion there are too may 'unsuitable' premises for wheelie bins - ours included, these houses are terraced.
But they take eg big cardboard boxes, so long as you've bothered to dismantle/flatten them, and will take more than one bag per house too

South Staffs are good at Christmas, they suspend the green waste collection throughout December and January and make household waste collections weekly instead. When we were living within Cannock Council's area they were totally inflexible, kept to a fortnightly timetable and green waste collections continued throughout the year regardless of whether they were needed.

We get a black wheelie for general waste, a green wheelie for garden waste (for which honour we have to pay an extra £30 odd per annum) and a green box for recycling. They won't take certain types of cardboard, only the thin stuff, nor tetrapaks The green bin and black wheelie go alternate weeks, even in winter when there is no garden waste The lids have to be down firmly or they won't empty. I've known Mick to have to stand on the top of the black bin, at times such as Christmas, to make sure we can get the lid down.

It's crazy isn't it that they don't suspend garden waste collections in Winter.

This is what our council will take in the recycling bins. We can also put small electrical items and batteries in a carrier bag, leave it at the side of the bin and they'll take those too.
