is there a way to tell who a fence belongs to?

Agree with all that's been said about the general principles of sorting out what's whose ..... but that said, when our left-hand fence at the back came down last year, it turned out to be our responsibility, so we went ahead and replaced the two panels and post affected - and paid for them. NDN didn't offer to contribute, but he'd only recently moved in and I think he was out of work at the time, so we didn't mind.

The right hand fence (back and front) is not ours, but the responsibility of the Housing Association who are landlords for the first house in the next road. Several years ago, they refused to allow us to put trellis-work on top of it at the front, at our expense (which we wanted to do to stop miscreants climbing over it from their road into our road) saying it would be unsightly. Lucky we asked them, I guess!

So we planted fast-growing red robinia bushes just inside our border instead which are now higher than the fence ....

The back garden of our restaurant in Beaminster was stone walled on three sides. We knew the rear wall was ours. We kept repairing the left side wall when the stones were loose as next door were growing deep rooted trees and bushes against it which weakened it but we thought it was 'our' wall and then the right side wall fell down into our garden and our solicitor told us on looking at the deeds that this was 'our' wall. Fancy that! We seemed to be liable for three walls. Insurance company rebuilt the fallen wall but since then with old properties I always ask the boundaries to be defined and which fence, wall, hedge are we responsible for. New builds are well mapped out. Many a neighbourly relationship can be ruined by disputes over fences.

I would never put a fence up with the good side facing next door Thats like putting your curtains up with the nice side facing the street

We have feather lapped fencing and it is far far stronger than the fence panels

Well, I had a look at the deeds yesterday and it turns out my neighbour is right - the fence that separates her and my back garden is my responsibility. So I'll definitely go ahead and replace the remaining dodgy panels at the back of the garden as soon as I can afford to, but it will be interesting to see what happens, as 2 years ago she (thinking that it was her fence) replaced a part of that fence when it was damaged. Wonder if she'll ask me for the money back.

Usually on your deeds it will state who is responsible for shared walls/fences between adjoining properties, if you have a mortgage the bank/building society is likely holding them till the debt is paid off then you usually get them.

Very simple the "T" on the plan accompanying the title to the property denotes ownership of the fence.
