My paternal grand father was found on Southport Beach - so that knocks that side of it on the head  I keep thinking I should try the other side of the family, and Grumpy keeps saying he really should try his mob, but as they're from Belgium and France, as it was then, may be not ;)

My cousins and I were the 32nd generation of our family to be born in the same town - how boring can you get?! :D

Ooh thank you Saundra! We'll be looking at that later - last time we looked on a free weekend, we couldn't find any trace of John's side of the family. Something a bit dodgy with them if you ask me ;)

Well we know that John's Grandad had to leave Northern Ireland, where he was born, pretty sharpish so whether he was here under an alias or whatever I don't know!

My friend is a genealogist and did mine for me when my parents died, as a gift. I found out some interesting stuff, for example my dad's family who came from the NE were originally Irish, miners from Derry, and I had no idea about that. I also found out that a great great grandfather on mum's side was a horse vet in Westminster and his son was caretaker of Big Ben at the beginning of the last century :)

We hit a dead end with Dad's paternal line, he was born illegitimately and although I always thought his dad's name was Hanley (dad had two names as a boy and two on his marriage cert!) he took Sewell (my maiden name) from his stepdad, and it turned out that Hanley was his grandmother's maiden name and nothing to do with his father, whoever he was!
