Winchester - any recommendations

Postby meriad » 17 Mar 2014, 12:29

anyone here know Winchester quite well? Nadine (my SIL) is turning 40 on Monday and we had planned on having a girly Spa day but I'm struggling to find anywhere that is a) not stuipd expensive and b) can fit in our treatments at decent times; so basically we're giving it a miss for Monday and going to do treat outselves some other time.

Therefore I figured that instead of the spa, we could go somewhere really nice for a very long and leisurly brunch / lunch that involves some sparkling vino and some shopping and what better place than Winchester given I've heard so much about it and how pretty it's meant to be, but neither of us have ever been - and it's reachable by train :D

So does anyone have any comments (good or bad) about Winchester, where to go for lunch and what there is in the way of shops?

Only driven past it but there are plenty of places to eat on the tourist information site.
Have a go with one of the rifles and you may hit the target!!

What are you three like??

Well, I've booked (what I hope) is a nice place: http://www.oldvinewinchester.com/restaurant (http://www.oldvinewinchester.com/cms/wp ... B-2014.pdf) and have told them it's for a special occasion so they said they'd seat us at a nice table.

Ooh, I love olde worlde pubs, good choice Ria. It should be a great day out. :D :D :D

I really would like that Mezze platter followed by the slow-cooked lamb shank with a red wine, redcurrant & mint gravy. :)

It used to be a coach stop on the way down to Southampton, to catch the IOW ferry - so I know the coach park LOL but otherwise it just seemed like a very pretty country town to me ;)

 *Light bulb moment* Maybe Di knows it? Or even Loz, as it is kind of going their way? ;)

Nope, not me :D
I've only ever been once, a few years ago, on my way home from Southampton (in my car lol). Had a nice wander round, but no idea about anywhere :D
