Kindle Fire v Something Else

Postby Gal » 18 Jul 2013, 19:27

I am considering buying something like the above, but the choices for a non-techie like me is mind-blowing

I want to be able to read on it, surf the net on it (like here or FB, Twitter etc) and that's about it, I can't imagine I'd want to listen to music on it because generally these things are bigger than phones so it would be hard to carry around if, say you were out walking. In the cottage we stayed in at the weekend there were ipod docks....my friend has an Ipad which she adores! But I don't have anything I... so maybe that wouldn't be suitable.

Suggestions please?

I've been looking into this too Gal.

Mick has a Kindle Fire and we really like it. The main thing he does on it is surf the internet, read the paper, play games and watch tv/listen to the radio. It is very geared towards Amazon books (obviously) which does annoy him sometimes as he doesn't really read but it doesn't bother me - I like the fact that they are there on the carousel. You can't get itv player on it for some reason.

He has the Fire rather than the Fire HD - this doesn't have a camera on it which isn't a problem for him but obviously you can't use it to take photos. The HD does have one.

I have been looking at one of these each for the girls.

It is cheaper than the Fire (at the moment it is £99 in Tesco plus an offer of £20 off - you have to apply for the discount for some reason rather than get it automatically). It does everything the Fire does for less money plus it has a camera and webcam so you could skype on it (I assume). I assume that you could download books from places other than Amazon and also download the Amazon app so that you can get books from Amazon on there too (I haven't looked into that though as it isn't something that the girls are likely to do).

The reviews on the Acer seemed quite good and I did find a site that compared the two together and the recommendation there was to go for the Acer.

I'm not at all techy though so maybe I have given you completely duff information!!!!

The main thing to consider is what would you use it for most. If it's to read books, the next question is where would you be reading.

The reason I'm asking is because the Fire or any other tablet for that matter isn't the best way to read out in the sun as the glare makes it almost impossible. I particularly like to read on holidays, mostly lazing on the beach so have both, the tablet for surfing etc and a Kindle (much kinder on the eyes) for reading.

John had the Kindle Fire (not the HD) too and he really likes it. He doesn't use it to read though, he just uses it for online stuff.

Oh now see I'd want to read in the garden or the beach (if we go anytime) so I'd need something that'd be clear in sunshine....

Thanks for that :)

Kindle book readers are brilliant for reading in the sunshine as the type of screen used means that you don't get any glare from the sun, it's just like looking at a paper page in a book.

But a kindle is JUST for book reading isn't it? Is there anything that could do both, with a good reading screen in sunshine?

I have the basic Kindle dedicated for downloading and reading books and I can read that outside in the sunlight just the same as a regular book. The print is clear and sharp.
